Oxycontin, heroin, fentanyl, and other opiates like oxycodone, are painkillers known as opioids. Highly addictive, these drugs are prescribed to help people deal with pain, but they are commonly abused due to their habit-forming nature and the euphoric high produced when taken recreationally. This makes these opiate drugs, which are derived from the poppy plant or made synthetically, quite dangerous because as addicts become accustomed to their effects, more and more of the drug is required to produce the same effect. Methadone is prescribed for two main reasons: for pain relief, and for the treatment of opioid dependence. The methadone maintenance program in Ontario is administered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
